HOTELS AND TRANSPORT IN ZAMBIA

HOTELS

There is a number of hotels in Zambia of international standards especially in Lusaka. Advance booking and reconfirmation imme diately prior to arrival is therefore essential. The following are the most commonly used by International travelers.

TRANSPORT

Rail and Road Transport

Being a landlocked country, transshipping is inevitable for Zambia. Ports usually used for imports and exports are Durban in South Africa and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.

From all ports, goods may be transported by rail or by road. The infrastructure is in good condition.

The route from the port of Beira is fairly safe now with the improvement/cessation of civil hostilities in Mozambique and so, it too, offers an option to the southern route.

Covered, refrigerated as well as open wagons are available on the northern route on the Tanzania Zambia Railway, and the southern route through Zimbabwe or Botswana on Zambia Railways.

AIR TRANSPORT

Zambia has one international airport at Lusaka with a capacity to park twelve (12) large aircraft Airbus, Boeing 747, DC 10 etc. Smaller air ports are at Ndola, Kitwe and Livingstone.

International passenger as well as cargo planes take off at Lusaka. Flights to London, Rome, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Bombay, Johannesburg, Nairobi, Harare and Gaborone are available from Lusaka on airlines flying into Lusaka.

WATERWAYS

There are no major inland waterways in Zambia. Mpulungu Port on lake Tanganyika is an inland water port linking Zambia and Burun di. Some of Zambia's exports to Burundi and Rwanda, especially cement and sugar, go through this port. It is however a small port.
