THE ROLE OF
THE EXPORT BOARD OF ZAMBIA

The Export Board of Zambia (EBZ) is a statutory body established by government under the 1985 Export Development Act of Parlia ment. It was created solely to spearhead the development, promo tion and encouragement of local products in foreign markets.

This was a consequence of the realisation of the precarious nature of Zambia's foreign exchange earning base and the need to diversify this base. Fluctuations in international commodity prices and the general vicissitudes of the international market in the 70s and 80s exposed Zambia's foreign exchange vulnerabili ty.

Government, therefore, established the Export Board through the Export Development Act No. 25 of 1985 as amended by Act No. 29 of 1994 and its basic functions are the following:

  1. on trade policy matters, to represent the interests of exporters to government and its agencies and to recommend policies in relation to trade promotion, development of export production and to the regulation of export trade;
  2. to advise exporters, potential and existing, on export markets, trade information; on quality, supply and pricing of export products; on existing export regulations, export incentives and available technical assistance;
  3. to promote the development of exports in general and of specific products by liaising with missions and organisations in export markets, by trade fair participation, by undertaking trade missions and by other promotional activities;
  4. to develop, or assist develop, Zambia's human resource in export production and marketing through various training activities for officials, managers and technicians in the export sector.

MISSION STATEMENT

The overall mission of the Export Board of Zambia is to broaden the foreign exchange earning base and increase actual foreign exchange earnings through non traditional exports (NTEs), i.e. all other products and services other than metals, and so reduce the country's dependence on metal exports.
