Windows 2000 - Dial-up Configuration
Setting
up Dial-up Networking
Select Start and then Settings.
Then click on Network and Dial-up Connections..

Double click Make New Connection.and Click Next.
on the screen that comes up.
Select Dial-up to the Internet. and
Click Next.

Select I want to set up my Internet connection manually...
and Click Next.
Select I connect through a phone line and a modem. and
Click Next.
Insert Area code and Telephone number
Click Advanced.

Select PPP and check Disable LCP Extensions.
Click the Addresses tab.

IP address:
Select Internet service provider automatically provides one
(Note: Even if you have a static IP, you should still
obtain one automatically.)
DNS server address:
Select Always use the following:
Primary DNS server: 208.224.176.40
Secondary DNS server: 208.224.176.33
Hit OK. and then click Next.

On the "Internet Connection Wizard" twindow that
comes up, select No and click Next and then
Click Finish.
You will return to the "Network and
Dial-up Connections" window
Right mouse click on the "ZAMNET" icon then
Left mouse click on "Create Shortcut" then
A box will pop up saying "Windows can not create a
shortcut here..."
Click "Yes" to clear that box.
Click the "X" in the upper right corner to close the
"Network and Dial-up Connections" window and
you will return to your desktop

Back on your desktop should be a new icon
called "Shortcut to ZAMNET". Double click on
the "Shortcut to ZAMNET".
If this is the first time you have clicked on the shortcut to
ZAMNET, the screen below should appear.
Before you try to connect for the first time you should click
on the "Properties" box to configure this
dial up connection.

In the "Connect using" box should
be your modem's description. Click on the "Configure"
box to check your modem configuration.

If your modem speed is 28.8K, 33.6K or 56K,
set the "Maximum speed" to 38,400.
All three boxes should be checked in the
"Hardware features" section.
"Enable modem speaker" will silence the modem
connection noise if unchecked.
Click "OK" to return to the ZAMNET Properties

You probably already have entered one
number and
to add the second number click on the "Alternates"
box.

These are the three numbers for Lusaka
users. To ADD or EDIT these numbers click the appropriate box
at the bottom.

ADD and EDIT screens are almost identical.
ADD or EDIT the two internet access phone numbers below.
Click "OK" to continue

When you are done you should have all the
numbers . Whichever number is on top is the first number to be
dialed. You may change the position of a number by the arrows
to the right.
Click "OK" to return to ZAMNET properties
To edit the "Location" click on
the "Edit" box at the bottom

You may anything into the "Location
name"
Put your area code in the "Area code" box
If you have the CALL WAITING feature on your phone it must be
DISABLED or
you will be kicked off line when someone calls your number.
Put a check in the "To disable call waiting, dial"
box then
click the black arrow in the empty box to the right to get a
drop down list
then click on *70, from the list.
Most phones have "Dial using" Pulse

Click on the "Area Code Rules" tab to continue

Your screen should look like the one below
Click the "Options" tab to continue

Under "Dialing options" check all
boxes to see your dialing set up
in the main screen of the shortcut to ZAMNET.
To help with any "busy signal" connections you
should have
"Redial attempts" set to 20
"Time between redial attempts" set to 1 second
"Idle time before hanging up" set to never
Click on the X.25 box to check these settings

"Network" should say none
and everything else should be empty.
Click "OK" to return to ZAMNET properties

Click the "Security" tab
to continue

Set your values to the same as those below
and click "Networking" to continue

Make sure the "Type of dial up server
I am calling" box is set as shown then
Click the "Settings" box to check the configuration.

Check the boxes shown below and click
"OK" to continue

Under the "Components checked are used
by this connection" box
Make sure only "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" is
checked then
Click on the "Properties" box to continue

On the "General" tab make sure
only the two circles shown below are dotted.
You will have to enter the DNS numbers in the
"Preferred" and "Secondary" boxes.
Click on the "Advanced" box to continue

On the "General" tab make sure
both boxes are checked then
Click on the "DNS" tab at the top to continue

The "DNS" tab should be set like
the screen below then
Click on the "WINS" tab at the top to continue

The "WINS" tab should be set like
the screen below then
Click on the "Options" tab at the top to continue

The "Options" tab should be set
like the screen below then
Click on the "Properties" box to continue

"Do not use IPSEC" should be
dotted
Click on "OK" to return to TCP/IP settings

Click "OK" at the bottom to close
the "Advanced TCP/IP Settings"

Click "OK" at the bottom to close
the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties"

Click on the "Sharing" tab at the
top to continue

here should be nothing checked on this
screen
Click "OK" at the bottom to finish the setup

You have now finished modifying an
existing
Windows 2000 Dial Up Connection
Check to make sure your User Name is correct.
Just Click on "Dial" to make the Internet Connection
!
Once you see you are connected you need to open up your
browser
(Internet Explorer or Netscape) or open up your email software
(Outlook Express or Netscape).
