NO
DIAL TONE
- Is
your modem on? Is it plugged into a phone line, a power source, and
your computer?
- Telephone
line plugged into a wrong jack on the modem. Ensure that it is plugged
in the Line jack.
- Your
telephone line not plugged into the telephone wall jack.
- Damaged
cable between modem and telephone wall jack - test it by connecting
a regular telephone.
- Modem
not installed, or needs to be reinstalled.
- Wrong
Com Port (Connector) chosen in your communications software.
- Some
device on the same telephone line (e.g. answering machine) is off-hook.
Make sure that all other devices are on-hook.
- There
may be a problem on your telephone line. Make sure that you can get
a dial tone on a telephone handset connected to and through your modem
when the modem is turned off.
NO
CARRIER
- Try
setting your modem to a slower speed to compensate for line interference
with your local telephone service.
- Interference
from phone company voice mail on your phone line.
- Interference
from other equipment on same phone line (answering machine, fax).
- Someone
picked up an extension phone on the line you are using.
- Zamnet
could be experiencing technical difficulties. (Call customer support
to confirm).
MODEM
DIALS BUT WON'T CONNECT
If
after you hear the modem finish dialing and does not connect within
4 to 5 rings afterwards:
- Click
on cancel and then click on connect. Try this several times.
- If
problem persists, cancel the dialup and ensure that you're using pulse
dialing instead of tone dialing.
- If
pulse dialing is set and the problem continues, try dialing in again
but at a slower modem speed. This can be changed under the modems
in control panel.
- If
problem persists, try to reinstall your dialup
networkworking
LINE
IS BUSY (busy signal)
- Network
congestion. Try calling later.

Disconnected After Verifying
"Username and Password"
If
the system keeps prompting you to reenter your password, this
could indicate that either the Username or Password have been entered
incorrectly. In
that case:
- Check
to make sure your Caps Lock key is not on. Your username is case
sensitive. For instance, if your username is:
computer,
you cannot enter Computer or COMPUTER.
Make
sure your Username is in lower case when dialing into Zamnet. (Your
e-mail address is given by username@zamnet.zm)
- Are
you sure that your password is correct? Please call Zamnet Support
if you need to reset your password. Also
remember that passwords are CASE-SENSITIVE! So Password is different
to password
- Ensure
that you're logging on to Zamnet using your main account details
and not your mailbox details (Username and Password).
If, however, the problem is that you just get disconnected during
the handshaking process (verification of Username and Password),
then :
- Ensure
that you are using pulse dialing instead of tone dialing.
- Ensure
that the TCP/IP settings from network in control panel are correct.
- Ensure
that the dialup networking TCP/IP settings of Zamnet are correct.
- Try
reducing the modem speed from modems in control panel.
- Please
call Zamnet Customer Support for assistance.
Are
you getting bumped offline frequently?
- This
problem could be caused by line noise, electrical interference (static)
to the line. Line noise will disrupt your connection and may cause
you to be bumped offline. Sometimes, you may get a bad connection,
and simply reconnecting will solve the problem.
- If
you have call waiting, but are not using call block, incoming calls
may bump you offline.
- Zamnet
could be experiencing technical difficulties.
'Dial
Up Networking could not negotiate a compatible set of network
protocols...?'
It
is not confirmed what causes this error, however one of the
solutions below should fix it.

Check
the Dial-Up Networking connection properties and Network properties.

Reinstall
Dial-Up Networking.

Turn
the computer off and back on again. Sometimes this error is
a temporary 'glitch' that will be resolved by simply rebooting
the machine.

the baud rate. See:

Recreate
a Dial-Up Networking connection but leave at the default settings.
- Double-click
My Computer on your desktop.
- Double-click
Dial-Up Networking.
- You
will be presented with a number of icons, one of these will
be called Zamnet
- Click
zamnet once to highlight it.
- Click
File menu then Delete.
- You
will be presented with a window asking Are you sure you
want to delete Zamnet
- Click
Yes.
- Double-click
Make new Connection.
- In
the Type a name for the connection you are dialing:
box, enter "Zamnet"
- Ensure
your correct modem is selected in select a device.
- Click
Next.
- In
the Area code box, ensure the correct one is entered.
- In
the Telephone number box, ensure correct number is
entered.
- In
the Country code box, ensure Zambia (260) is entered.
- Click
Next then the Finish button.
