Suspected serial killer shot dead
By ALEX NJOVUA PEASANT farmer has allegedly shot dead a suspected serial killer who has been terrorising Mufulira residents, especially farmers in Murundu and Chiwela farm blocks.
The suspected serial killer whose body is at Ronald Ross Hospital mortuary in Mufulira was shot dead around 05: 55 hours on Monday when he attempted to grab a bicycle belonging to 56-year-old Boyd Richard Nyirenda in Chiwela farm settlement.
Late last year, five people were brutally murdered in a space of two days.
Those killed included a mother and her three children when they were on their way to their farm.
An 83-year-old man was also murdered when he was stabbed in the neck with a knife.
Copperbelt police commanding officer Antonneil Mutentwa confirmed the killing of the man aged between 37 and 40.
Mr Mutentwa said in an interview in Ndola on Wednesday that the deceased, who was armed with an AK47, fired two shots and that one of the bullets caught Mr Nyirenda on the cheek.
He said Mr Nyirenda refused to release his bicycle and that in the process a fight ensued.
Mr Mutentwa said Mr Nyirenda managed to grab the fire arm from the deceased who ran into the nearby bush after he was overpowered.
He said the farmer fired a shot in the direction where the suspected serial killer was hiding and that the bullet hit the deceased.
“The farmer did not mean to kill the deceased…he just fired a shot in the direction in which the deceased was hiding,” Mr Mutentwa said.
He said police are still investigating the incident.
