163 Zambians in jail abroad
By Times ReporterPARLIAMENT yesterday heard that 163 Zambians have been arrested and are serving prison sentences outside the country from 2008 to 2009.
Foreign Affairs Deputy Minister Fashion Phiri told the House that the Zambians were serving jail sentences for various offences among them illegal entry and stay in a foreign land, drug trafficking, shop lifting and other misdemeanors.
Prof Phiri said this when he responded to a question from Roan MP Chishimba Kambwili (PF) who wanted to know the number of Zambians serving jail sentences in foreign lands.
Among the countries in which the Zambians were serving jail sentences were Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique South Africa, Mauritius, Namibia, United States of America, Brazil, Italy, the United Kingdom, China and Pakistan among others.
Foreign Affair Minister Kabinga Pande said the Government was discussing with some countries so as to enable the prisoners’ serve their sentences in Zambia.
Local Government and Housing Deputy Minister Moses Muteteka told the House that Lusaka City Council realised over K 14 billion from property rates between January and December 2008.
Mr Muteteka said the money used to pay statutory contributions, utility bills, salaries and wages, payments of motor vehicle insurance and cholera prevention activities among others.
He said this when he responded to a question from Mwansabombwe MP Samuel Chitonge (PF) who wanted to know how much money was realised from property rates in the said period and how it was utilised.
Community Development and Social Services Deputy Minister Adonis Mufalali told the House that K220 million was spent on traditional ceremonies in 2008 while K193 million was spent in 2007.
