2 more cars staked at Stanbic Open

MORE value has been added to the 2004 Stanbic Zambia Open Golf Championship following two cars which have been staked for golfers who will sink a hole in one on six and nine.

Investrust Merchant Bank and Marunouchi Zambia staked a car apiece on hole six and nine respectively.

Organising committee chairman, Rodwell Chawatama, said in Lusaka yesterday that Investrust have staked a Suzuki Jimmy worth US$19,000 (about K91.2 million) for the golfer who will sink a hole-in-one during the four-day championship.

The Stanbic Zambia Open Golf Championship will be played between March 11 and 14.

Chawatama said Marunouchi have also staked a vehicle but that he was yet to be briefed about the model of the car for hole number nine.

Both holes six and nine are par threes.

"Apart from the vehicle, Investrust have given us cash contribution of US$1,000 (about K4.8 million) while Marunouchi are yet to tell us the type of car they have put up.

"But they (Marunouchi) have given us US$2,000 (about K9.6 million)," Chawatama said.

Already, CFAO have staked a Nissan twin-cab on hole number 11 for the lucky golfer.

Hole number 16, which is a par three, has not yet attracted sponsorship but the organising committee is certain sponsors will come through.

Last year, four vehicles were staked for the hole-in-one but none of the 150 golfers who participated in the Stanbic Open had the lucky shot.

Andre Cruise of South Africa is on record to have sunk a hole-in-one on two consecutive years in 2001 and 2002.

Chawatama also announced that Parmalat Zambia have contributed US$2,000 (about K9.6 million) towards the hosting of the golf championship while Speedline, Cell Site and Innscor Distributors each donated US $1,000 (about K4.8 million).

Innscor will also provide Energy Aid, a soft drink, to all the participating golfers during the week-long event.

"Our shortfall is now US$22,000 (about K105.6 million). We have managed to raise US$228,000 of the required US$250,000.

"We are very hopeful that we will make it," he said.

Foam Scarf, Chawatama said, have made a contribution amounting to US$15,000 (about K72 million) by erecting a scaffold stand on the 18th hole and will construct a 600-square meters floor is the corporate masque.

The closing date for entries for the Stanbic Zambia Open Golf Championship is February 26.

Meanwhile, the Stanbic Zambia Open Golf Championship organising committee have introduced media awards for excelling journalists on the coverage of the tournament.

Chandalala Kondolo said the best writer will receive K750,000 while K500,000 and K250,000 are the second and third prizes respectively.

The best photographer will get K500,000.
