State to explain deepening maize crisis

VICE President Enoch Kavindele has said government will today state the official position of maize stocks in Zambia and maize imports situation, the Times of Zambia reports.

But sources said if the first consignment of imports did not arrive in the country in the first week of November, the country would be hit by the worst shortage of the staple crop, maize.

The estimated maize deficit is between 200,000 and 300,000 tonnes.
Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) president Ajay Vashee when contacted for a comment said the union was still waiting for communication from the Government on the current position.

"The Government says it will make an official position this week. So we cant say anything at the moment until the Government states the official position. But nothing is happening at the moment," he said.
